An illustration of fireworks. It’s a soft pink/red with a bright white core. Below it says Happy New Year in light blue.

What was your weekend like? I bet it was something like mine. Wit( the fireworks at least.

For this year’s New Year’s Eve we went to my in-laws. We were supposed to go Christmas Eve with all of hubby’s siblings and their families, but my father in law tested positive, and there were too many of us already sick. And with me being immunocomprimised we decided to postpone the “Sinterkerst” event we had planned. Part of the family still met up elsewhere for Christmas, but we decided to stay home. Especially Levi was under the weather, and he didn’t eat for a couple of days. We decided we would go to the in-laws on NYE. Part of the family was missing so we couldn’t do “Sinterkerst” this time around. We’ll have to set a new date for that.

Hubby prepared the Oliebollen batter at home. Three versions; one gluten free for me, one without raisins and one with. Our eldest really doesn’t like raisins, so the raisin free one was for him. We took the batter with us in the car, allowing it to rise a but more before frying them at the in-laws. I got dibs on the first one, since we always start with the gluten free ones to make sure it’s all safe. It was very yummy.

We initially planned to do a cheese fondue on New Year’s Eve at our place. But now our plans had changed. Luckily my in-laws liked the idea of the cheese fondue, and we had a lovely dinner at their place. We started out with a carpaccio salad, and followed up with the actual cheese fondue, and finished with a homemade green icecake. I had my own gluten free fondue pan. The fondue itself was gluten free for everyone, but as a gluten free person you don’t want to share the same pan with people who put regular bread in there.

After dinner the little ones were tired so they went to bed, while the teenager secluded himself to watch Peaky Blinders. I did some crafty colouring at the kitchen table for a bit before settling down with the rest of the family to watch the “Oudejaarsconference” (which I can’t translate properly because there is no translation for this. But it’s a monologue about recent events, specifically from the past year, done by a Dutch comedian.

A few minutes before midnight we woke the little ones up, got them dressed. And at midnight we all wished each other Happy New Year, after which we all went outside to watch the (insane amount of) fireworks. Which was the thing that inspired today’s drawing.

After watching the fireworks for a bit we went back inside, ate some more Oliebollen and watched some TV with the family. Sam Ryder was performing on BBC, which was lovely. And then we watched the fireworks in London, which is always impressive. When it was over, the kids were sent back to bed, and we slowly gathered our things to head back home. The two youngest are staying with grandma and grandpa for a few days.

And that’s how we started our weekend, and our New Year.

Happy New Year!
